Fawning over Nara

Nara is a daytripper’s dream. It is a serene and tranquil Japanese Town with an immense amount of history underlying its ordinary looking façade.

Journeyed to Nara on a spring afternoon, the city was lined with pink cherry (sakura) and plum (ume) trees. Nara’s eight World Heritage Sites are easily reached by foot in this little city, with most of them cluttered around Nara Park.

There live the deer, Nara's glory. Legend says, the god Takemikazuchi arrived on a white deer and commissioned sacred animals to guard the newly built capital. Today, deers roam freely, feeding on grass and biscuits (¥150) from delighted tourists.

Passing the park’s entrance lies the impressive Nara’s National museum which carries some of Japan's most beloved treasures for viewing but remember to head to Todaiji (admission ¥500), Nara's crowning glory.

Nara is overwhelming, the free roaming deers, immense history and watching sakura drifting in the wind gently descending to the ground... I can never get enough of you, Nara.

  14. Wow I've never heard of Nara before but your pictures and description has intrigued me. In a while, it seems like something out of a fairytale. Like a Disney princess where all the animals approach them. I would love to visit for the deer to come up to me like that! It also looks beautiful with the cherry blossom trees...those are always my favorite! Thank you for sharing:)
