Located at the foot of Ikebukuro marui departmental store, you can find Patisserie a la campagne. Looking real quaint and rustic, it exuded a homey feel. We removed our winter clothing that shielded us from the strong winds and approached the cake display fridge. The pastries were really tempting, I almost wished I could skip my mains.

We started our meal with a French take on the Japanese chawanmushi and I have got to say it actually taste better than the authentic ones. It was light, soft and real easy on the palate. Now for the greens, we had a bowl of salad and fried mixed veggies on hot steamy mixed grains. It was refreshing, delicious but not too heavy, saving enough space for the basil chicken spaghetti.

The spaghetti had great texture and flavour but honestly, I was really eager to try out their desserts. Now for the main highlight! The desserts. The first dessert on my mind was definitely the cherry blossom cake. I always wondered what makes a cherry blossom cake so delicious, but let’s leave that mystery for later and savour its flavours. Next on the list was their chocolate layered cake. The layered cake looked really appetizing, the layers were consistent and they were really generous with the cream and strawberries.

Well, what could I say, the cherry blossom cake was stunning and the flavours were remarkable. The combination of the light fluffy cake and crunchy base was to die for.

As for the chocolate layered cake, the strawberry and cream sandwiched between the chocolate layers really balanced out the richness of the chocolate. This made the flavours distinct and not overpowering each other. Really good.

Overall I would rate Patisserie a la campagne 5 stars.

After the satisfying meal, we spent our time leisurely walking around Marui mall where we found a 100 yen shop. The 100 yen shop though priced cheaply should not be undermined. It is a true diamond mine if you are looking for home, beauty or food products.

With our hands filled with our purchases, we conveniently shifted ourselves to the neighbouring cafĂ© that sold sandwiches and cakes. We had a cheesecake and a sandwich that was absolutely delicious. But the highlight had to be the cheesecake, it was creamy and had great consistency.

It was a truly satisfying day.

Happy October!
